Envisioning the After Before the Before


Before I got into making ceramics, I had no idea how different the pieces look between the first firing (bisque) and final firing (with the glazes/paints/etc). Of the many, many learning curves I’ve had so far with trying to figure out this incredibly complicated collision of science, chemistry and art the one that has been the most interesting to me is the vision. To be able to project and predict (ballpark-style) what it WILL look like—often days and days and multiple processes later—has been fascinating. And frustrating. And enraging. And so, so fulfilling and satisfying in those moments when you get it kinda right....

This was one of those (albeit rare) cases where I had something in mind, and was able to MIRACULOUSLY have it turn out pretty close...

For all the times clay makes you cry, the successes keep you coming back and trying again...
